Crunchy, salty, and satisfying, popcorn is a great snack — and it can be healthy, too. Air popped popcorn has only 30 calories per one cup serving plus whole grain that’s packed with antioxidants and fiber, which helps you fight disease while keeping you fuller, longer But the challenge is how to ‘dress’ your popcorn in a healthy way so you don’t override its benefits. Common varieties, like buttery, salty movie theater style and sugar-packed kettle corn, have enough fat and calories to be considered junk food. For a tasty but healthier popcorn, I recommend starting by air popping your kernels. While you can buy a variety of air poppers, this is the one I recommend (trust me, it’s worth the price when it comes to savings in microwave popcorn and gains in healthy snacking).
Once you get that under control, here are 5 Fit, Strong and Sexy ways to dress up your popcorn!
5. Chili powder. Toss your popcorn with a dash (or two) of red chili powder for spicy pepper flavor plus some lovely scarlet color. For even more heat, pair your popcorn with diet ginger beer (the BEST is Gosling’s).
4. Dried Fruit. Toss some raisins, dried cranberries, and even dried apricots to add a bit of sweetness and some chewy texture. Be careful not to add too many craisins, etc. however, as dried fruit is very calorie-dense.
