How to See What You’re Made of: Climb a Mountain…17 Times.

Several months ago, I said ‘Yes’ to the dare (ahem challenge) of a lifetime. I clearly had no idea what I was in for, and a part of me knows I did it because it sounded ‘badass’, and who doesn’t want to be a badass? And then it got ‘real’, and I got nervous….and scared. I had formally committed to do something I really had no idea would be possible, both physically and mentally, and I had made that commitment, on a big level—as I challenged Chris Roussos, the new, and notably epic, CEO of 24 Hour Fitness, one of the most iconic, and biggest fitness brands on the planet to do this with me…and he also, didn’t even blink before saying a resounding ‘I’m in’. You see, my own athletic career was cut short (or eclipsed rather) by an injury, and I agreed to do this, just after femur surgery while still on crutches Then taking it a step further and committing to a team of three other individuals of whom I have the utmost respect and was terrified of letting down (special shout out to 24 Hour Fitness CEO, Chris Roussos, World Class Spartan Racer, Matt Novakovich, and the Woman who runs over 80,000 Group Fitness classes across America, Micki Stary – clearly NO weak links on this team). Needless to say, I REALLY truly didn’t trust my body, but some greater force told me I had to do this, and with the support and accountability of this mighty team I stuck with it. Fast forward… I have just gotten back from this ‘29029 Mountain Ironman’ challenge, and while I am proud to say, I achieved the measurable goal, 17 summits, what I really conquered was so much more. This was one of the most memorable, life changing events of my life. As Jesse Itzler said, no one will understand the difficulty when we try to explain it later. But really, thats a metaphor for life: No one really understands what we go through, what our personal battles are figuratively or literally, what mountains we had to climb to become who we are today. I wanted to share an incredibly poignant and heart felt post from one of the fellow climbers from the weekend. This will be the very first time I’ve ever taken someone’s personal post and shared it here (with his permission of course), but I felt it was that powerful. No matter who you are, what you’re dealing with, what your own mountains are, I believe there are so many tenants to resonate with here: from learning your own personal limits and knowing when to push them, to seeing the bigger picture (it’s not always about achieving a vanity goal or something tangible and quantifiable), to the power of community – we don’t do anything in this world alone, life is about relationships, the journey and how we want to spend it. My personal lesson, the mantra which rang through over and over in my head throughout the weekend, especially in the hardest of moments was this: Your defining moments come when it gets hard, really hard, when all you want to do is give up or give in, take the easier road. It’s in those moments, when your decisions define you, and make you the person you become. Enjoy the read, and I encourage you to share, comment ALL of the above (and below). Here it is from Alan Stein Jr, “I signed up for the #29029 Everest Challenge to challenge my soul, push my physical – mental – emotional limits and to connect with extraordinary people. I’m beyond thankful to report that I did all 3. With full humility, I did not complete all 17 ascends (I did 12). And I would be lying if I told you that part of me wasn’t very disappointed in myself for not accomplishing my goal. However, I can proudly say that I’ve never felt more satisfaction from not reaching a goal than I do at this present moment. I had a transformational experience… I learned a lot about myself… I learned invaluable life lessons… I made new friends… and I was able to stay in the present moment the entire weekend. I am not an endurance athlete by any means. I have completed a marathon, a Cross-Fit type competition, the infamous Hell on the Hill Challenge… and even played college basketball… and this was far and away the toughest thing I’ve ever done. And it’s not even close. The running joke amongst the climbers is that it is impossible to accurately describe how hard this mountain was. Calling it a ‘hill’ is laughable and there really aren’t words or even pictures that do it justice. This thing was a beast. I had a pseudo-strategy that didn’t work well (in hindsight). I did 5 climbs on Friday night and chose to go to bed early (11pm) to be well rested for Saturday and Sunday. I should have kept climbing Friday night (lesson: never postpone work… get it done early). I got up at 6am on Saturday to begin again and chose to pace myself. I took extended breaks after each climb and enjoyed some wonderful food, a killer massage and some engaging conversations. But again, in hindsight, I wasted too much time during those breaks. Before I knew it… it was late afternoon on Saturday and I had ‘only’ completed 10 ascends (lesson: slow and steady wins… consistency matters). My decision to stop climbing on Friday night (while many others kept going) and to take long breaks on Saturday(while many others didn’t) is what knocked me off pace. So around 2pm on Saturday I had to make a choice – do I step on the gas, hone in on a singular focus and push myself as hard as possible to finish the remaining 7 in the allotted time? Or do I simply continue chipping away, climb after climb, but do so at a pace that will allow me to enjoy the total experience? I chose the latter – and don’t have an ounce of regret. Once I removed the self-imposed pressure of ‘getting all 17’… I was able to have some fun and forge several very solid friendships. I connected with a few people that I know I will be friends with for years. I also chose to shift my energy from myself to supporting and cheering on my fellow climbers. And while every single participant has my full admiration and respect – those that completed all 17 climbs – I truly commend you for achieving something remarkable. You are in a very special club and should be eternally proud. I had a few friends in particular that showed unparalleled grit in finishing… it was inspiring to watch! I feel so strongly about this group – that if/when I ever see anyone wearing the #29029 logo… I will give them a heartfelt hug and buy them a drink on the spot. We created a special community that I’m honored to be a part of. To help offer some perspective, here is the background of a few of the participants (all of whom said this was the toughest challenge they’ve ever done): A guy who has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean The world record holder as the fastest man to climb the highest mountain on each of the 7 continents A member of the Spartan Race Pro Team 2 former NFL players The fastest man to complete the Hell on the Hill Challenge The lead personal trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser A woman who will be running 7 marathons in 7 consecutive days on all 7 continents Countless marathoners, ultra-marathoners and elite fitness professionals I’m beyond honored to have ‘shared a mountain’ with these immortal athletes. Lastly… I want to acknowledge every person that was on staff and made this event happen. Events like this are the definition of teamwork… and this group was flawless. From the event organizers to the operations team to the EMT’s to the folks supplying the food and encouragement at the rest stations to the photographers & videographers… you all added so much value. I appreciate you and will be forever grateful. To steal a concept out of Jesse’s philosophy… statistically speaking… I have about 2,000 weekends left in my life. I am doing this challenge a different way

Early this summer I received a message from Jesse Itzler that opened with this: Do you have what it takes? Jesse, aka ‘The 100 mile man‘, author of “Living with a Navy Seal” and legendary Entrepreneur (too many companies to list), wanted to create a challenge that is as physically difficult as an Ironman, but mentally even tougher (yes…really) —-and such this ‘Ironman Everest’ challenge was born. His message closed with this: “This is a challenge that will truly Check Your Soul. Are you ready to find out what’s inside of you? Come climb the goddamn mountain…17 times.“ My answer (within 30 seconds): “I’m IN!” I take longer to decide on what type of milk to buy then it took me to answer this. The concept of climbing a mountain, physically and mentally touched me to the bone, and I knew it was calling. I knew that if I were to think about it logically, the time commitment, the physical ability to train and prepare, the mental stress added to an already full plate, it just didn’t make sense – but if you really want to SOAR above the everyday ‘average’, there are times you need to shut off that  part of your brain and just do it. ACTION often precedes mindset! But Why? Too many of us get so caught up in the comfort and urgency of the daily routine and ‘fire at hand’, we fail to see the bigger picture, and therefore get stuck. Stuck in our bodies, our minds, our mediocre jobs, lives, relationships… People want to know the secret of those who really seem to ‘have it all’….it’s BECAUSE of things like this, there is such power in taking on new roles and challenges that put you in situations with new and different people who see the world differently that we do.  To be the very best, no matter the category you cannot just coast, you have to constantly be curious to learn more, try new things and to constantly dare to challenge yourself, push the boundaries of what is possible.’ But in doing this Everest Challenge, (one mountain to summit 17 times) my biggest fear is NOT the obvious, and very different than one may think and I’m scared…. to death. This time, I’m not sure I will physically be able to do it, as I am not even able to train for it. I’ve made the public announcement, I have 24 Hour Fitness on board behind me, and even solicited 24 Hour’s new CEO, Chris Roussos, to do it alongside me (literally – we all have mountains), and I know I’m risking letting everyone down, mostly myself. I spent the greater part of this summer on crutches after yet another injury, something I have been plagued by since the end of my competitive running career (some things will never totally heal or be the same). I am extremely limited in what I’m able to do physically, which makes the mental side exponentially terrifying. If I trained like I wanted to, I would end up injured again, and there is a good chance my body won’t be able to handle this, but I need to try, I am looking at this as a new type of challenge – for me that is training by refraining from training. To go into this, this mountain in front of me (literally) NOT being at my physical best, not being completely fit or ready. That’s scary. But that’s life, if you wait to be ready, you will be forever waiting. You need to know yourself, what you have to work with, and do the best with what you’ve got. As Jessi said, we need to make the decision, stop waiting and make the goddamn decision to make it happen. If you fail, you will fail knowing, and you will be stronger for it, you will know how to fall down and pick yourself back up again. What is your mountain? Are you ready to go after it? “I thought you were in health and fitness, shouldn’t you practice what you preach?”

 “I thought you were in health and fitness, shouldn’t you practice what you preach?” I have a story to share.   I hate kale, I don’t ‘juice’, nor do I like to use ‘juicing’ as a verb. I love anything that involves sugar, starchy carbs and salt – if I could live on ice cream, white bread’n’butter and potato chips alone, I’d be a happy girl – and yes I even drink (gasp) alcohol….and, on occasion, too much. A somewhat judgmental, rigid, and moderately fit acquaintance recently saw me out with a few girlfriends one Friday evening while I was indulging in copious amounts of oysters, french fries and champagne. She kindly brought it to my attention that I am in the fitness industry, shouldn’t I be practicing what I preach? Didn’t I know I was publicly poisoning myself with alcohol? If I were truly in tune with fitness and health I would be disgusted by deep fried, non-GMO, non-organic starchy white potatoes, which apparently is the equivalent of heroine. Her educational lecture on my ‘imposturing fitness’’ concluded with a recommendation that I should really get in tune with what health and fitness really is. Perhaps I try one of her intensive mind/body detox cleanses in Bali, where there are no toxins, distractions or temptations to ‘sin’, as the goddess herself phrased it. My career started as a competitive athlete, a professional 10,000meter track runner. I know my body like a science; I know exactly what puts me at the top of my game. When it comes to performance, there isn’t a more grueling race when it comes to sheer lung capacity, physical fitness and stamina –for those who aren’t familiar, it is essentially a ‘sprint’ for 25 laps around a 400 meter track. After a drastic injury, I lost my entire level of fitness, and had to learn to get back to fitness in a new way, without being able to run, heck, I literally had to learn to walk again. So I’ve seen both sides, and know what it’s like to be at the top, and also at the complete bottom with every obstacle ahead of you. It became my mission to find out what truly works, what could achieve peak fitness, physically and mentally. In doing so, I tried everything, read everything I could, got my personal training and nutrition certifications and first hand experimented to find out for myself what is optimal to live the best healthiest fittest life. And you know what I learned above all? There is no ‘right program’, or ‘set of rules’ there is only a right way for you. We should all aim to really LIVE and THRIVE, not just exist. Diet and fitness needs to be a part of your life that allows you to live better! What’s the point of life if you have to live in bubble that deprives you of the real world and all it has to offer? That is not truly living! No offense, I love Bali, for a getaway, but I don’t want to exist in a bubble. Now skeptics, make no mistake, I am not knocking anyone who prefers a specific type of diet, and rigid fitness plan that has hard rules, if that is truly what makes you feel your best and gain the greatest happiness, than by all means- I applaud you, you figured out what works for you! I am simply saying that what works for one person is going to be different from the person next to you, and we cannot judge or try to box it all into ‘right vs wrong….bad vs good….healthy vs toxic. You have to do what makes our body and energy feel best! I am often asked about achieving balance in health and fitness. Well, I believe ‘balance’ actually means tipping the scale sometimes, walking on the edge, letting loose, and then knowing when to put your head down and grind it out. This is WHY I work out hard and create such high intensity, yet low maintenance (aka little-to-no equipment) workout programs, so I can enjoy all of the pleasures of life. I feel like I have turned my cheek so many times on self-proclaimed ‘masters of fitness, nutrition, meditation’ as they distill their doctrines of what is the ‘right way’ and what ‘really works’. My philosophy is to try everything, learn YOU, what makes you FEEL good, feel happy, feel energized and confident. I am here to help you and support that journey. I love the quote “You do YOU”. So am I a hypocrite of health and fitness? An imposter? It took me a long time to speak up and own this, and you know what, I am comfortable and confident that I truly am my fittest, healthiest version of me, I wouldn’t change a thing. So if that makes me an imposter or hypocrite to health and fitness, then I’ll take it, (and I’ll smugly admit that I’m F** happy and proud of it). My Mission for you: Spend the time to really get inside your head and body and figure out what truly works. To o it right, like anything, it’s not as simple as buying a product or flipping a switch – it takes dedicated time and commitment, but if you make that commitment, you will be FOREVER CHANGED. Now I must tell you, that this prolific journey didn’t come without help, I actually had many people in my life, but what surprisingly resonated most was something I was most cynical about: a life coach! The mere term made me roll my eyes. However, SO many people I admired were all mentioning the SAME person, literally RAVING about Christine Young, so I had to at least see what it was all about. I. Have. No. Words. Amazing Thigh & Butt Workout
