Apologies for my tardiness in getting a recent blog post up, I actually came to visit my parents in my hometown this past week in the small town of North Bay, Canada – and no sooner did I get home did I fall victim of the FLU! Never fails, I finally go home besides my annual 3 day visit a Christmas and am bed-ridden. BUT I guess if you’re going to be sick, it sure is nice to have good ol Momma taking care of you! Anyway, here is a topic near and dear to my heart: Carrie Bradshaw AND Fitness!
Carrie Bradshaw made Manolo’s famous, but that was 10+ years ago, before ‘sporty’ really was a fashion genre in itself, and sneakers were simply meant for the minutes you spent pounding the pavement or aerobics class. Heck, when Carrie first revealed herself to the homes of Americans, the topic of sex was taboo in social settings – talk about a cultural movement this show had!
Now fast-forward to today where designer workout wear and juice bars are the norm.I have to admit, even though I spent most of my life as a competitive runner, I was never excited by the idea of sneakers, and was strict about my policy that they should only be worn for the purpose of running and specified ‘workouts’.

I remember telling my girlfriends that my pet peeve was when I saw a male or female wearing jeans and running shoes (a common faux pas of the majority of my fellow cross-country folk), hence I also toted that I would never date another fashion handicapped runner. YES, I was a runner, but had always deemed myself otherwise when it came to ‘style and trend’. A dork at heart, I wanted to be perceived as a ‘fashion-forward’, ‘in-the-know’ trend-setter and, in my perspective, sneakers had no place in this….
My tune has changed, not only do I now think that sneakers are acceptable, I actually think they are some of the hottest additions you can make to your wardrobe and I’ll tell you WHY.
Prices and styles range and brands are popping out with new and exciting prototypes across the board. I have actually been finding myself planning outfits around pairs of sneakers as part of my ‘street style’.
My newest obsession is a brand called ‘Newton‘ – if you aren’t familiar with these shoes, you must check them out. Originally designed for runners and triathletes, they have expanded their collection for all types of uses. BUT, I have to be honest, the reason I was attracted to these high performance kicks was the look, (yes vain I know – but at the end of the day, i’m still a girlie girl at heart), and after seeing a few trendy men and women strutting around in these, it was love at first sight.
Of course I still enjoy splurging on a beautiful stiletto, but it’s equally as fun and fashionable to rock a really great sneaker (and way more justifiable ;). Plus, in my poll of 20 of the closest men in my life, 90% said a girl is much more attractive in a pairs of tights or minis with awesome running shoes she can stride around in versus a pair of way uncomfortable looking heels – evidence she has tried too hard.

What’s your ‘sporty chic’ love? or is there another look you would love to rock? LEt me know and let’s see if I can pull it up and create a video!
